What is Rabies? It is a terrifying virus found in the saliva, nerves and brain tissue of infected animals and people. In people, rabies is mainly caught by bites from rabid dogs.
How Can I Tell If A Dog Has Rabies?
Be suspicious if a new dog enters your village acting strangely, or if your dog suddenly shows the following symptoms.
Not all dogs show all symptoms.
Some of these behaviours are normal for some dogs.

Any animal that gives birth to live young, not eggs, and feeds them on milk, can get rabies.
This includes pigs, cattle, buffalo, goats, bats, cats and people
How Do I Get Rabies?
The virus inside a rabid animal’s saliva enters your body. Biting is the most common route, but it can also enter via an existing scratch, wound or into the eyes, nose and mouth. Catching, killing and preparing a dog for food is high-risk and ill-advised.
99.9% of People With Rabies Symptoms WILL DIE
Once symptoms start, there is NO CURE.
What If I Get Bitten?
Treat a dog bite seriously! An animal with rabies can spread the disease for up to 10 days before symptoms.
Immediately Wash the wound
Clean thoroughly with soap and running water for at least 15 minutes, then apply betadine or another disinfectant to the damaged area. Do not suture, bandage or put anything else into the wound.
NEXT, GO TO THE HOSPITAL For Treatment
Go to a hospital immediately for post-exposure rabies vaccinations. These are free for children up to 16 years old at the Angkor Children’s hospital. Additional treatment may also be given.
Receive a full course of INJECTIONS
Your doctor will advice you on how many vaccinations to recieve and when to come back. Usually they are 4-5 done over the course of several weeks.
WE HAVE A DEADLY PROBLEM IN CAMBODIA
BUT
There’s fabulous news!
The solution is simple
Vaccinate dogs over three months of age every year.
Although dogs can spread rabies, you and your dogs can prevent rabies deaths.
If you vaccinate dogs over three months of age every year, you will eradicate rabies from your village.
When each village does this, all of Cambodia is rabies-free. Forever.
Keep Your Dogs Healthy
It is essential to take care of vaccinated dogs. If they die in accidents or by disease, are sold or killed, then there may not be enough vaccinated dogs in the village to keep the virus out.
Vaccinated dogs protect you and your loved ones from rabies by preventing the virus from entering your village.

I’m not sure if a dog has rabies, what do I do?
If a dog is bitten by another dog that you think has got rabies, put it safely away from people and other animals in a cage or chained up. Do not make direct contact but make sure it has food, water, shelter and its poo is cleaned away. Only kill it if the dog that bit it is confirmed to have rabies. read more
